Youth Development

The Mdumbi Education Centre has become a hub of extra-curricular activities led by community members, including computer sessions, gardening and creative projects like beadwork.

MEC is currently looking into working much more closely with the local Primary School, which suffers from a lack of resources, teaching skills and motivated staff. MEC has already begun its first stage of Outreach Education in Lujisweni. We hope to support the OVC project’s educational needs more in the future. TransCape is presently looking into the pros and cons of starting a new support group for the orphans living in the Mankosi community. If this does happen, it will be something MEC will endeavor to support. mec 001

TransCape is currently in communication with local and national educational institutions and governing bodies. We communicate as far as possible with these bodies about the progress of the Education Centre. We hope that our networking, research and exchange of information will allow the work within the Education Centre to be recognized and replicated in other rural communities.

Training and Workshops

Persona Doll Training- In 2007 MEC hosted a two days workshop on the Persona Doll methodology, which is intended for teachers, caregivers and educators to use life size dolls as a way of raising issues around gender, bias, inclusion, disability and diversity. It was a very successful workshop with 20 attendees ranging from Occupational Therapists to Home Based Carers and Preschool teachers.

2006_11_06_ 027 small HIV Awareness Workshops- Our HIV/AIDS School program coordinator gives regular workshops on HIV awareness and sexual education. The children’s response is very rewarding and eye-opening.  They also arrang Voluntary Counseling and Testing for HIV/AIDS, using the Education Centre as meeting place. Two nurses from Canzibe hospital support us with these events.

Holiday Camp- During the school holidays, MEC staff and volunteers organize outdoors activities, ranging from a sand-castle competition and a treasure hunt to environmental workshop and lots of sport and fun games.  hooray
