Tourism

We believe that the development and management of natural resources should happen in a sustainable, fair and equal way. For this to happen a logically and sustainably fair proportion of the people living in the vicinity of the resource should participate in an informed way and fairly share the benefits. How closer, the more, how further, the lesser.

We see other potential tourism products at and around Mdumbi as a natural resource. Through supporting local people to start their own small tourism enterprises, we hope to stimulate the establishment of a locally owned tourism industry in the area. This is another area where the marriage between tourism establishment and developmental organisations forms a vibrant and effective synergy.

Mdumbi Backpackers has made all its secondary income generating opportunities like activities, selling of local products and domestic services available to be owned by local people and TransCape support them financially and with training to establish these busineses.

So far the following have been established:

  • Mdumbi Sea and River Kayaks
  • Ziyaduma Restaurant
  • Mdumbi Professional Massaging
  • Village Based Accommodation
  • African Pot Accommodation
  • Tata Sparg’s Volunteer Accommodation
  • Cave and Waterfall trails
  • Surf School
  • Horse Riding
  • Xhosa Bread

The following two projects are of a bigger scale and established through a 50/50 partnership between TransCape NPO and the Local Community Trust. This partnership covers management as well as profit sharing. This means that 50% of profits goes towards the local community representing legal entity and the other 50% to projects implimented by TransCape in the area, mainly to sustain certain projects with continued running costs like education. That is 100% benefits to local communities.

  • Mdumbi Point Tourism Development
  • Lwandile Tourism Development

All agreements with community has been completed, land allocated and we have even got 4 community memebers on a one year tourism management course to make sure community can efectively share in management.
