Nokuphila malnutrition project

Child malnutrition is a serious problem in the rural areas.

3 This is frequently due to underlying causes like tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, however it is often also the case that mothers lack information about what they should be feeding their child. 22

In association with Transcape, a doctor at Canzibe hospital has started a malnutrition project. This allows mothers and malnourished children to stay in specially build roundavels surrounding a garden, while the children can get nutritious food they need, and the mothers can attend workshops in how to grow and cook food that will sustain their families healthily. beforeafteropt Two village health workers are employed by Transcape to give the mothers health-education, cooking and gardening lessons. Each mother will receive nutritious powdered milk product when they are ready to leave, and the child receives a package, consisting of nappies, plastic nappy-covers, set of new clothes, towel, blanket, and a toy.

Children In Need

This project was brought up by the Medical Officers in Canzibe Hospital. During their work in the hospital and surroundings they identified a lot of children in need who were struggling for (financial) help.

Together with Bambisana, TransCape has defined the use of this money: to enable children to get medical, social and any other attention where needed.

  • The donations for this project are used for:
    • Transport fees for children to be able to attend Canzibe Hospital or to specialist departments in Mthatha. Because of far distances in this environment, it can be very expensive for patients to attend an hospital. If, in doctors’ opinion, it is necessary for a child to re-attend an hospital, or to visit a specialist department,  Children in Need can help them financially.

    • Application-process to reply for a Child Grant. Some children are suffering from hunger and lack of medical attention, because the mother doesn’t have enough financial resources to care for the child. With a Child Grant, she gets a monthly amount of money, to be able to feed her children.
    • Cloths and other basic means.
    • Pellagon or Formula Milk in emergencies.
    • Basic needed equipment in the Paediatric Ward.

Every month, an average of 10 children do directly benefit from the Children in Need funding. At the moment, to most expenses are the transport to Mthatha for specialist opinions. I expect that our focus-group will grow in 2009. Since January 2009, the team in Canzibe Hospital has been expanded with an Occupational Therapist, Social Worker and Physiotherapist. Those members will also be able to identify a lot of children in need, and they can make use of the Funding.
